The water is shallow around the shore and the sea floor deepens gradually. There are beach bars providing beach facilities, light snacks and drinks. The houses in the area are mainly summer residences and villas.
Built at the northern part of the plain bearing the same name, Komotini is the seat as well as the administrative, financial and cultural center of the prefecture. It is also the seat of Eastern Macedonia – Thrace Region and a transport interchange. During the Turkish occupation, Goumoultzina or Gkoumourtzina (as Komotini was known at the time) was the most important settlement of the region and became very prosperous. During the second half of the 19th century it became major agricultural and breeding center of the area. It was liberated in 1913, but did not join Greece unitl May 1920 with the signature of the Treaty of Sevres. A great number of refugees settled in Komotini in 1922-1923. In the modern town the Christian and Muslim communities co-exist in peace as far as culture and every day habits are concerned.

Vistonida Lake is a complex of lagoons which belongs to the wetland of International Importance of the Ramsar Convention. Along with the Nestos river delta which stretches to the west, lakes Vistonida and Ismarida compose the Natural park of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace. The wetland Vistonida – Porto Lagos is as variform as few others.
The northern and southern shores of the lake are lined with reedy areas and tamarisk shrubs and with periodically flooded marshes of saline and fresh water. 21 to 37 species of fish, depending on the season, that have been recorded in the lake attract about 300 bird species such as the Little Egret, the Flamingo, the Pelican, the Great White Egret and some of which are extremely rare as the White Headed Duck , the Pygmy Cormorant and the Lesser White Fronted Goose.
